Title: Grade 2 English

Authors: Meagan Merhi and Meghan St. Jean

I. Standard Benchmark(s) and Learning Objective:

Students in the second grade need to know how to read, spell, and most importantly write. That is the teacher's most important job for the year. The students by the end of the year need to be at another level of writing and pronouncing words. To make sure students achieve these skills by the end of the year, Rhode Island set a state standard on what the students need to know before being promoted to the next grade. The state standard for Rhode Island is that by the end of the second grade, the students need to be able to identify any multi-syllabic words and be able to sound out words they do not understand. Also by the end of the second grade the students need to identify the setting, problem, and major events in a story. The goal for this lesson is to make sure that the students have a higher vocabulary to prepare them for the next year. We want to make sure that they know how to spell, pronounce, and write each word. We will make sure that the students can use the words in sentences and be able to write a story including this week's vocabulary words. This will help the students to start reading at a higher level. The objective is to get the students to understand new vocabulary and to be able to use new words while speaking to one another. They will understand more and be able to identify words by sounding them out. We will help them to read larger books, ones with longer chapters and they will be assigned to read each night to expand their reading and spelling ability. After they will need to write a journal about what they read and they will write down any vocabulary words they did not understand throughout the chapters. The students will be prepared for the upcoming year and they will be able to read and write at a higher level then when they entered our classroom.

II. The Learning Environment:

Our classroom is decorated with many colors and decorations to make the children feel comfortable with their
surroundings. We made the room creative to make the kids excited about learning so they do not get
distracted by other things going on outside the classroom. We alternate with how we arrange the desks.
Sometimes they are in a big circle, so everyone can see each other, but that is more for group activities, and
then we have them in regular rows so everyone is facing the board and can see the teachers desk. There is
a chair placed on the side of the teachers desk so if any student has a question or a problem they can go
sit and talk with the teacher one on one, It is important to have many stations in the room so the students
can interact in groups with working together and also interacting with the teacher one on one. We have a
reading area with a bookshelf that includes many second grade reading level books. We made sure to add a
rug so all the students could come together so they feel everyone is being included, and has the teachers
attention if needed. There is no chalk board, instead there is a dry erase board to make it easier and clearer
for the students to read. Also the multicolored dry erase markers also get the kids excited to learn and helps
them focus on what is being written on the board.
We made sure not to make the room too bright and distractive because the most important thing to have is the students number one attention so they get a clear understanding of everything being taught. There is also a resource area in the classroom, so that the students can go and refer to dictionaries or other folders of vocabulary sheets if they are having trouble with spelling and meaning, and there are also math practice sheets. We want to make sure that the students also learn how to do things on their own to get them ready for every new year of moving ahead. There are times where the students get grouped in pairs of two or four at the most to have student to student interactions, to work together on projects and fun assignments. There is mostly teacher to student interaction so every student gets the attention they need. We also make sure the teacher walks around the room and see how every student is doing to also notice their different learning styles. We make sure to make the classroom fun, exciting, and creative but as well as a great learning classroom to gain a good education.

III. The Learning Activities:

The activities that took place in today's class was we started off the day with some new spelling words. The students
were asked to group with the person next to them and go through their English book to find the meaning. If they couldn't
find the meaning in their English book they could go to the back for our second grade dictionary. Once every student was
done defining the 6 words the teacher made sure to go over the right definitions. We would ask the students to raise their
hands if they know the answer and who ever was correct would be able to go up to the candy jar and choose one piece of
candy of their choosing. At the end of every week there would be a Friday superstar vocab quiz. They would get 6 new
words every Monday and have their quiz on Friday. This is one lesson/activity that makes learning fun and makes the
students want to continue with it every week. It helps the students and teacher get involved and work together on knowing
the right meaning. Having students interact and communicate is very important so the students feel comfortable within the
classroom and with the other students around them. Some artifacts that were produced were candy, to make the kids
excited about getting the right answer, dictionaries and English books to help them find the meaning, and also
a teachers aid was present who walks around the room to make sure everyone is doing their work and is also there to help the
students if they need help. Activities should always be fun, being serious is good too, but the kids get more excited and are more
focused when it is something they are interested in and they don't get bored.

IV. Assessment Strategies/Items:

Assessment are necessary for the students so we understand that they are learning something in the class. After the weekly activity, we will give the students a vocabulary quiz on the words they were given at the beginning of the week. Then one by one the students will come up to the desk and read a few sentences from a story so we can see where their reading level is at and to see if it has improved. The vocabulary will be a spelling quiz and they have to write a sentence using each word. This way we will know how well they are learning and how their vocabulary is expanding. Before a the assessment we will review by playing a short game or have a mini spelling bee and the winner will get a bonus point on their quiz. After the assessment the students will have to go back and fix every word that they got wrong. They will rewrite the words three times each for the ones they get wrong so they understand how to spell it. To prepare for their weekly vocabulary test the students will be given a list of words to study from. The assessment results will be used to show how well the students learned throughout the week. It will help us decide what we need to do better or show us to see if we need to change the way we teach. We will try a variety of methods by playing games and allowing them to work in groups together. Class participation will earn them extra points so that they can work to save their points for a prize at the end of the year. They will help each other to learn and will work in groups to form questions before an exam. All of the students will have equal opportunity to learn and come up with different ideas of what they want to see taught in the classroom.

V. Reflection:

This lesson that we developed made the class more interesting and fun for the students to learn. It was fun to be able to write down what we thought about teaching and to give our ideas on what we thought would be a good lesson. Our lesson was creative and we came up with many ideas that would make the students want to learn. The lesson focused on vocabulary and expanding what they already know, but at the same time it was helping them to be prepared for the next year. The environment we created for the students is very comforting and a place where they can feel safe but eager to learn at the same time. The learning activities are made so the children can work together and can help each other and learn from each other. Assessments were very important so we could understand what the children already knew and to make sure our teaching methods are working. The lesson will help the students become better at reading, writing, and spelling. By the time they are done with the lesson, they will be ready to be promoted to the next grade level for sure!

Reflection: By Meagan Merhi
The lesson that we created was creative and fun to see what kind of things we will have to come up with in the future when we become teachers. I think it is always important to have a plan before teaching something because it makes the teacher more organized and will know how much timing he or she needs on every part of his/her assessment. I thought it was fun to write down different ideas of what me and Meghan were going to make of our classroom and also the lesson. We wanted to make something fun and entertaining to make sure the kids would not get bored easily and would stay focused and want to come back and learn something new each time they came to class. Our classroom is made to make the students feel comfortable in the environment that they are in and also we made sure everyone was comfortable with each other and got to know one another before doing group work. I also love how we made sure to have a teachers aid walking around helping the students if they needed it. Overall, I loved the lesson plan we came up with and the classroom we made. I think it was a comfortable, easy and entertaining lesson and classroom and the students will get a good education and will be ready to reach higher grades in the future.
